Niagara Region Native Centre Partnership

St. Catharines city council is moving to create a formal partnership with the Niagara Regional Native Center to advise the City on implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

St. Catharines has taken a different approach to Canada’s 150th by focusing on renewing relations with our First Nations

Through the Celebration of Nations / Célébration des Nations festival and the pow wow at Montebello Park, this is just the beginning of a new understanding, new programming and strong relationships.

As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report notes, all levels of government in Canada have responsibilities in building strong, positive relations with First Nations and reconciliation.

Over the coming weeks I will be working with the leadership at the NRNC on a plan to strengthen our relationships and build a formal partnership to advise the city on ways to implement the Calls to Action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

I often talk about building a “compassionate city” and this is an important part of that work. It’s about creating a community where everyone is inside the circle; where everyone is welcome and included.

I look forward to continuing to learn together, on this journey to carve out the next 150 years.
