It’s springtime in the city and along with the fresh air, we are all looking forward to getting outdoors to enjoy our parks and trails and meeting at festivals and events this season. From fundraisers, walk-a-thons, planting community gardens, to cultural festivals and enjoying the arts, each of these events relies on volunteers to make it all happen.
April is Volunteer Month, and I’d like to take the opportunity to share my appreciation with the volunteers who generously give their time to support community organizations. On behalf of the City of St. Catharines, I’d like to say thank you to the volunteers who share their time, talent and treasure to make our city a better place, each and every day.
On April 10, we will hold the 30th annual St. Catharines Volunteer Recognition Night. It is an honour to be able to meet so many volunteers at this event. I often speak about St. Catharines as a Compassionate City, a place where everyone feels welcome and included. The spirit of volunteerism that thrives in our city is an excellent example of what a compassionate city is all about.

There are many ways to contribute and be a part of the Compassionate City project. Get involved in something that’s meaningful for you, whether it’s helping the homeless, supporting young athletes on the sports field, at your business, helping seniors living in isolation or at your place of worship. Share your ideas and experiences using #CompassionateSTC and sign the Compassionate City Charter at www.CompassionateSTC.ca.
The success of our city depends on volunteers, community partners, schools and businesses working together to make our great city even better. By working together, we will continue to make progress towards our vision to be the most dynamic, innovative, sustainable and livable city in North America.
